General Course Overview for Coaching Principles and Sport First Aid (PED 260 151)

This online 3 semester self-paced course works in tandem with Carl Sandburg College´s Blackboard Course Management Software and the texts Successful Coaching, Third Edition, Sport First Aid, Third Edition and CD-ROMs of video clips to give learners an engaging, interactive experience. Geared toward serious coaches (those who coach athletes age 14 and older), the course challenges coaches to define who they are as coaches (their coaching philosophy, objectives, and style); enhance communication and motivational skills; become more effective teachers and trainers; and improve team, relationship, risk, and self-management skills. Coaching Principles covers the fundamentals of being a successful coach. Sport First Aid's course, geared toward serious coaches (those who coach athletes age 14 and older), Sport First Aid teaches coaches how to prevent sport injuries and how to make the correct decisions during on-field emergency situations. The focus is on first-response evaluation and treatment before the arrival of emergency medical personnel.

Part 3 Course Projects

Along with completing the above requirements to satisfy American Sport Education Program's certification there are additional course requirements to satisfy 3 semester hours of college credit. A complete description of each requirement will be posted within the course syllabus once you are enrolled in the PED 260 151 course. This part must be completed by May 1, 2008.

    • Developing A Coaching Handbook – throughout the course you will be required to develop a useful and resourceful handbook for a sport of your choice. You will apply what you have learned after completing the Coaching Principles and Sport First Aid segments and type this handbook as an assignment.
    • Create a PowerPoint report on a "nationally known" coach. Including but not limited to personal background information, interesting facts, records and accomplishments, philosophy, and a summary of your thoughts about this person.
    • There will be 5 discussion topics to respond to throughout the semester to ensure interaction amongst other participants enrolled in the course.

This course will help you learn how to teach the skills and strategies, and techniques and tactics of basketball. You'll learn about approaches to coaching, including the games approach (an alternative to drills-based coaching), you'll develop a season plan and a series of practice plans; and you'll improve your ability to coach during games. This course is suitable for high school coaches and for serious club coaches, college coaches, and advanced coaches at the youth level.

Course Objectives  (List specifically what the student will be able to accomplish at the conclusion of the course.) In this course you will learn how to
- explain the relationship and difference between technical and tactical skills and describe the traditional and games approaches to basketball practice (unit 1);
- evaluate technical and tactical basketball skills in your players and make use of your evaluation results (unit 2);

Students enrolled in this Internet class will study the general principles underlying the profession of coaching athletic teams and individual athletes.  This course will address the essential elements of successful coaching, (including youth sports) from proven coaching techniques to effective risk management.  Students will have the opportunity to earn certification through the American Sport Education Program (ASEP).  Illinois teachers may also earn 2.0 semester hours credit toward recertification requirements.
