Spring 2008 Faculty Technology Training Week!

Our Annual Faculty Training Week is back!

  • Topics have been divided into 3 hour blocks.  Pick and choose to meet you need!  Come to one or come to all!

  • $50.00 stipend for each block will be paid to attendees, including Adjuncts!

  • You will need to register for the course(s) you want to take (course #’s are listed with the schedule and descriptions on page 2).

  • An official record of taking the course will now show on your transcript!  You will be allowed to take each topic twice for compensation.

  • We have a maximum capacity of 25. Registration will secure your seat.  

  • Minimum registration of 5. Less than 5 will force us to cancel and you will be notified ahead of time.

  • Breakfast and afternoon refreshments will be provided.

Introduction to Online Teaching and WebCT/ Blackboard (FTL C01 630) Introduction to Online teaching will look at the Ten Principles of  Effective Teaching as written by folks at Bradley University. Bradley is a Blackboard/WebCt Institution and their principles are research based. Participants will find the Ten Principles useful in the Online setting as well as face to face setting. Topics include, Create an Active Learning Environment, Connect Knowledge, Help Students Organize Their Knowledge, and Encourage Faculty/Student and Student/Student interaction.

This session will discuss how to communicate with your students through WebCT and how to engage your online students to communicate with you and each other. Topics covered:  Announcements; Blogs; Calendar; Chat/Whiteboard; Discussions – Graded and Un-graded; Journaling; and Mail.

Grade Book (FTL C07 630)

In learning to use the grade book on WebCT/Blackboard, you will learn the basics of column types, creating, organizing and managing columns.  Others features such as formulas to calculate grades and column statistics will also be discussed.

Potpourri Session (FTL C08 630)

Learn ways to convert audio, video, or image media files into a format suitable for WebCT. Insert media files into a Content Module or develop a Media Library. See how the glossary tool in the Media Library can provide hyperlinks to word definitions throughout HTML files in your online course. Also, explore the various uses of the Groups tool; such as online signup sheets, private small group discussions, and private chat rooms for use in both the fully online course and online course supplement.

Introduction to Assignments (FTL C03 630)

This session will go in-depth on how to create and edit assignments. We will discuss best practices and common mistakes, such as changing dates and total points. We will also cover the newest addition to the Assignment tool: SafeAssign. We will go over how you or your students can check for plagiarism.  Topics covered:  Assignment tool; SafeAssign.

Introduction to Assessments (FTL C03 631)
 
In this session we will cover how to create, modify and manage assessments inside your course.  We will also cover bringing in publisher test banks; using Respondus to create quizzes and tests to publish directly into your course; and StudyMate to create games and interactive media.

Creating Content for Your Course (FTL C06 630)

Learn to save Microsoft Word files as .html and .pdf formats for easy student access.  Prepare your PowerPoints for online access.  Use Impatica to reduce your Power-Points for low bandwidth access.  Find out what Articulate and Camtasia can do to jazz up your content!  If time, we’ll throw in a quick tutorial on creating surveys!

Advanced Tools Usage (FTL C05 630)
We will cater to specific needs and questions of the group.  Bring your questions/problems and we’ll address them and try to show you some tricks-of-the-trade!  In addition, we will be demonstrating how to record podcasts of your lectures and publish them in iTunesU!
